2 SOG Jawans Injured By IED Blast Triggered By CPI (Maoist) Cadres In Kandhamal District

Kandhamal District, December 24, 2023: Two jawans of the Odisha Police’s elite special operations group (SOG) sustained injuries in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast triggered by cadres of the CPI (Maoist) in Sirla jungle in Kandhamal district on Sunday, a district police official announced to the press today.

The incident took place while SOG jawans were conducting a combing operation to flush out Maoists from their hideouts in the Sirla jungle. Kandhamal Police had been conducting a combing operation over the last two days in the area, where the Kandhamal-Kalahandi-Boudh-Nayagarh (KKBN) division of the Odisha State Committee of the CPI (Maoist) is believed to be active.

Around 10:15 am when the operation was underway, the IED explosion took place, injuring the two SOG jawans. The IED is suspected to have been planted by the Maoists.

“The two jawans sustained splinter injuries. The jawans were initially admitted to the Baliguda hospital. One of the jawans has been referred to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar,” said Kandhamal SP Suvendu Patra.

Police sources said a massive combing operation was launched by the jawans in Sirla forest under Tumudibandha police limits after the blast, and additional forces have been deployed.
