Activist GROW Vasu Arrested For Protesting Murder Of 2 CPI (Maoist) Leaders In Fake Encounter In 2016

Kozhikode District, July 30, 2023: Medical College police on Saturday arrested former trade union leader and human rights activist Ayinoor Vasu, known popularly as GROW Vasu, in a case related to the protest of the killing of two leading cadres of the CPI (Maoist) at Nilambur seven years ago.

There was a long-pending warrant against Vasu (93), in connection with the protest in front of the medical college mortuary in Nov 2016, where the bodies of the slain Maoist leaders were kept for postmortem examination.

In Nov 2016, central committee member of CPI (Maoist), Kuppu Devaraj, and WGSZC member of the party, Ajitha, were killed in an encounter with police at Varayanmala near Edakkara. Soon after the incident, Vasu had demanded a judicial probe into the incident alleging that it was a fake encounter He had participated in the protest in front of the mortuary.

According to Medical college police, Vasu was produced before a magistrate as he refused to apply for bail and was remanded in judicial custody.
